Google iTunes Alternative, Google Music, Coming by Christmas 2010 Read: Google iTunes Alternative, Google Music, Coming by Christmas 2010?

Apple has been constantly developing iTunes over time and turned it into a must have application for both Mac and non-Mac users. That’s probably why Google is interested in building its own music store in order for its Android customers to send more money towards Google instead of its competitors.

According to Reuters Google is currently in talks with the music labels in order to create its own music store that will give Android users access to music downloads and online streaming. It looks like Google’s own Vice President Andy Rubin is leading the talks about the future Google Music (actual name still pending) service, although Google will probably not confirm any of this yet.

But the new Google Music service, which will probably come with music in the cloud offers too, thus bringing music streaming besides music downloads to consumers, is coming by Christmas 2010 so we’ll definitely be interested to see how Google will try to make a name for itself in the music business.

Considering that the Android business is currently thriving, Google will probably have plenty of customers lined up to try the new Google Music service at least initially so they’d better come up with a worthy iTunes rival. The question is, will Google be able to launch a totally new digital music service by December 25? Some Android users are surely iTunes users too so it will be interesting to see if they’ll make the switch once a Google Music service becomes available

Record labels also seem to be very interested in Google’s new endeavor as apparently the fact that Apple controls an important share of the digital music market is worrying at least some of them. We’ll be looking forward to see Google’s progress in this music adventure and, hopefully, the next Android OS version will come with some Google Music on board.

BOKU In Talks With Google & Apple For Possible Acquisition Read: BOKU In Talks With Google & Apple For Possible Acquisition

Mobile might soon overtake traditional means of accessing goods and services on the Internet (i.e., computers). In some markets, like Korea and Japan, mobiles are the preferred means of accessing information and buying things online (and even offline). Google and Apple are aware of this, and are likely looking into acquiring a mobile payments company.

BOKU, a San Francisco-based startup is reportedly in talks with both Apple and Google for a possible merger, acquisition or partnership
. Discussions are currently in early stages, but BOKU execs are said to be in high-level discussions with officials from both companies, which signals a possible bidding war between Apple and Google that might run into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The company is seen as an attractive target because of its partnerships with carriers in the US and around the world. BOKU claims a market of about 1.6 billion mobile users. BOKU recently partnered with AT&T for a system that lets users buy apps and media just by entering their mobile number instead of bank or PayPal details.

Both Apple and Google are in intense competition for dominance in the mobile market, with the iOS and Android, respectively. iOS has gained a sizable market share, but the newer Android is quickly catching up.

Let’s see how this pans out. Hopefully, Steve Jobs will not have another fit if Apple doesn’t get to buy a company it wants, like with the botched Bungie offer.

Some of Apple's new MacBook Airs exhibiting issues with logic board, display

Early adopters of Apple's new MacBook Air are reporting a variety of issues, including faulty logic boards, display issues and kernel panics, after two weeks of usage.

Several discussion threads on the Apple Support website detail user trouble with both the 11-inch and 13-inch late 2010 MacBook Air models. In one thread, users report flickering and freezing issues, as well as vertical lines and odd colors. Another thread details trouble with the ultra-thin MacBook's new Instant-On feature.

Apple released a MacBook Air software update on the day of its release. The update resolved an issue where the system becomes unresponsive while playing a movie trailer in iMovie, as well as a problem where the system becomes unresponsive after waking from sleep when an external display is connected. However, several of the users reporting display issues on the Apple Support forums are still having trouble after installing the update.

One user posted a video to YouTube depicting the flickering screen issue.

Editors at Cult of Mac report having experienced both the video problem and a more serious kernel panic. According to the report, an 11-inch and a 13-inch MacBook Air model have both displayed a kernel panic when attempting to wake from sleep.

Serenity Caldwell of Macworld has also reported issues with the MacBook Air display, noting that the Air's display has turned a variety of colors: gray, tan, gray-black, and blue. Caldwell consulted an Apple Genius, who suspected "the Air's logic board might possibly be at fault."

Apple unveiled the latest MacBook Air models at its "Back to the Mac" event on Oct. 20. Sporting solid state flash storage and instant-on capabilities, the MacBook Air is "the future of the notebook," according to Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs.

Apple Introduces ITunes Sidebar, Brings Back Genius

Apple seems to still be looking for the right place for Ping, its new music-centric social network, introduced in iTunes 10. When Apple released a minor update to iTunes at the end of September, the company replaced iTunes' Genius sidebar with a Ping Sidebar. Now, Apple has quietly made another change to combine the two features.

As Macworld senior contributor Kirk McElhearn noted on his blog, instead of an all-Ping sidebar, iTunes now features a sort of hybrid iTunes Sidebar. The top now features an area for the currently playing song and buttons to "like" or post a comment about it. Just below is a My Recent Activity section to help listeners keep in touch with feedback from Ping friends on their activity; possibly an answer to initial complaints that Ping doesn't make much effort to keep users coming back.

The third and largest section ushers in the return of the Genius Sidebar, now a Genius Recommendations section that displays similar music from the iTunes Store (as long as iTunes can track down the currently selected song, of course).

Apple was able to make the change without releasing an update to iTunes. The sidebar is powered by HTML--it's basically a thin Webpage built into the side of iTunes, so Apple can serve up whatever it wants in that spot.

Interestingly, the design of the new iTunes Sidebar means that, as long as users opt into both Genius and Ping, Apple is now providing iTunes music listeners with quick access to two different kinds of recommendation systems: Genius, automatically (and anonymously) generated by the six degrees of iTunes Store purchases; and Ping, ideally a more organic stream of new music that flows from the circle of friends that you manually create in the store.

Apple, Google in secret talks with mobile payments startup BOKU

A new report claims both Apple and rival Google have been meeting with executives from BOKU, a leading mobile payments startup, to discuss a possible acquisition or wide-reaching partnership.

San Francisco-based startup BOKU aims to bring "bank-grade payments technology" to mobile platforms and create the standard for online payments using a mobile phone. Key partnerships with global carriers allow BOKU to claim it reaches 1.8 billion customers worldwide.

According to TechCrunch, BOKU President and CEO Mark Britto and co-founder Ron Hirson have met with Apple executives in charge of the iPhone several times over the past 3 weeks.

At the same time, BOKU has also allegedly participated in "high-level meetings" with Google Director of Engineering Michael Morrissey, who heads Google Mobile Services for Android, including the Android Market app store. BOKU has already partnered with Android developers to offer in-app purchases for Android apps.

Sources have yet to confirm whether Google is interested in an "outright acquisition " of the startup, but with both Apple and Google doing some "serious sniffing," the result could be a bidding war. The price tag on BOKU, which has brought in a number of "big-name investors," could reach 9-digits, reportedly costing Apple between $250-450 million, although TechCrunch was unable to fix an exact price at this stage in the negotiations.

With both companies looking for a mobile payments solution, negotiations with BOKU could reprise last year's race to acquire a mobile advertising agency. In late 2009, ad-seller AdMob attracted the attention of Google and Apple, with Google eventually acquiring the company for $750 million, just weeks after Apple reportedly approached the company.

According to The New York Times, Apple made a formal bid to acquire AdMob for $600 million. "While Apple conducted due diligence on the deal, AdMob agreed to a 45-day 'no shop' provision, a routine clause that prevented the start-up from offering itself for sale to others, according to three people briefed on the negotiations. But after Apple inexplicably let 45 days pass without consummating its offer, Google pounced," noted the Times report.

Just 3 days after AdMob's "no shop" provision with Apple expired, Google purchased AdMob. The search giant was willing to pay a large premium for AdMob simply to keep the company out of Apple’s arms, an executive familiar with Google’s acquisitions strategy told the Times.

After Apple failed to acquire AdMob, it turned to Quattro Wireless, paying $275 million to purchase the smaller mobile ad company. Quattro helped lay the groundwork for Apple's interactive iAd program.

"We don't know much about this advertising thing," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs when he announced iAd in April. "We tried to buy a company called AdMob, and Google came in and snatched them because they didn't want us to have them. We bought a smaller but still great company called Quattro."

With $51 billion in cash and reserves, Apple can afford to purchase BOKU, even in a bidding war. Last month, Jobs hinted that Apple could be looking into using its hefty war chest for more acquisitions.

"We strongly believe one or more strategic opportunities will come along we're in a unique position to take advantage of," Jobs said during the company's conference call for the fourth fiscal quarter of 2010. "We don't let the cash burn a hole in the pocket or make stupid acquisitions. We'd like to continue to keep our powder dry because we think there are one or more strategic opportunities in the future."

Apple releases iPhone, iPad iOS 4.2 Golden Master to developers

Apple has released iOS 4.2 build 8C134 for both iPad and iPhone and iPod touch devices, indicating the company is close to public release of the new operating system, originally slated for delivery this month.

Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs demonstrated iOS 4.2 at the company's iPod event early in September, showing off new features such as AirPlay wireless streaming of audio, video and photos to the new Apple TV or other AirPlay-compliant devices, an expansion of the company's existing, audio-only AirTunes feature.

Jobs also introduced the company's entirely new AirPrint wireless printing architecture, designed to enable users to create hard copies of web pages, emails and photos managed through a new Print Center app.

New features given and taken away

The new update will also finally bring multitasking features and iOS Folders to the iPad, along with a variety of other features currently only available on the iPhone and iPod touch, such as support for multiple email aliases, a unified inbox, and messages organized by threads in Mail, and the ability to open attachments in third party apps.

New multitasking features will also incorporate the software orientation lock and music playback controls available on the iPhone running iOS 4, which are accessed via swiping to the left from the list of currently running apps. The iPad also presents a brightness control in this section (as depicted below).

The iPad will also lose its hardware toggle assigned to locking the screen orientation; the button will instead work to mute audio, just like the iPhone. This move has generated some controversy because Apple not only refuses to offer customers a choice of how their hardware buttons work, but has also duplicated mute functionality, as the audio down button already works as to rapidly mute audio playback.

New features for gamers and enterprise users

iOS 4.2 will also bring Game Center to the iPad, allowing players to invite friends or find new opponents online to play against, as well as track their own achievements and high scores.

Apple has also outlined enhanced enterprise support features in iOS 4.2, including new device management capabilities, the ability to lock down email account settings, and stronger security enhancements.

New language and accessibility

The update also brings support for more than 30 new languages in keyboards and dictionaries, including Arabic, Greek and Hebrew.

It also strengthens accessibility features including support for navigating VoiceOver using a wireless keyboard and a wide range of refreshable braille output displays in more than 25 languages. On the iPad, larger text options up to 56 point fonts can also be specified for use in Contacts, Mail, Messages and Notes.

Previously reported iOS 4.2 features

A general overview of major iOS 4.2 features was profiled in a First Look report following Apple's initial demonstration.

AppleInsider also noted in a report filed in September that iOS 4.2 also incorporates support for Google's revised YouTube voting, a direct link to launching a FaceTime video call from within the SMS messages interface, and new CoreMIDI music APIs for music-related apps.

A report on the third beta release of the iOS 4.2 software outed new support for SMS ringtones.
