The biggest thing that drew me into this app (since I learned of its existence) was the interface. Put simply, it’s just beautiful. Everything about it is slick, and it’s also extremely fast. Whenever something is loading, you will be notified by the small bar at the top with a green orb that goes back and forth, and the entire thing just fades away when new data is loaded. I guess this replaces that spinner that we’ve all grown to love (or hate), which is a nice change and much appreciated. Clearly, the folks behind the development of this app didn’t skimp out on detail.

Jailbreak hack enables Siri on iPhone 4, 4th-gen iPod touch

Hackers have succeeded in bringing a limited port of Apple's new Siri voice assistant feature onto "jailbroken" versions of the iPhone 4 and the fourth-generation iPod touch, though they have noted that the workaround is not ready for a public release.

Steve Troughton-Smith and Grant Paul  publicized the hack via Twitter late Saturday. The tweak requires that devices first undergo a jailbreak, the procedure for hacking an iPhone to run unauthorized code and applications.

The two hackers provided screenshots and a video (below) of their success, while reporting that the service was "literally just as fast" on the iPhone 4 as the iPhone 4S. According to Paul, UI on the iPod touch felt "slightly slower," though the actual Siri was "pretty much identical."

Troughton-Smith said that he had boiled the entire hack down to "one line of code" plus "a *ton* of filesystem changes." He also promised that all details of the workaround would be revealed once he confirmed "it works, doesn't break other things and is safe," probably after the release of an iPhone 4S jailbreak. When asked whether a release date had been set, he said no, adding that doing so would "anger the hive."

Apple unveiled Siri earlier in October, announcing the feature as an exclusive to the iPhone 4S. In April 2010, it was reported that the Cupertino, Calif., company had acquired the developer of the original Siri app, possibly for as much as $200 million.

Given that initial reviews of the iPhone 4S have pointed to Siri as a main draw and "standout feature" of the device, Apple could move quickly to block the workaround from hackers. This could potentially lead to a cat-and-mouse game similar to its continued efforts to prevent jailbreaking and unlocking.

Apple's first television ad for the iPhone 4S focused exclusively on Siri serves as further evidence that the company plans to, at least at first, rely on the service to distinguish the device from its predecessor. Though Siri is currently only officially available on the iPhone 4S, a recent report from The New York Times suggested that Apple may center the interface of a rumored high-definition connected television set around the voice assistant feature.

iPhone 4 remains top-selling US smartphone

Despite iPhone 5 approaching, Apple iPhone 4 is still NO 1 hot sale smartphone.

Analyst T. Michael Walkley with Canaccord Genuity revealed in a note to investors on Tuesday that checks with U.S. carriers indicate that sales of the iPhone 4 remain on top ahead of the iPhone 5 debut, despite the fact that the iPhone 4 is more than a year old.

"Our checks indicated strong sales of the iPhone 4, as it remained the top selling smartphone at AT&T and Verizon despite increasing consumer expectations for the iPhone 5 launch," he wrote.

"During the holiday season, we anticipate strong sales of the iPhone 5, as we anticipate a strong global launch with increased distribution to new carriers including Sprint in the U.S. market."

Walkley's research found that the iPhone 4 remained the top-selling handset at both AT&T and Verizon in August. In addition, the $50 entry-level $50 iPhone 3GS was the second strongest selling handset at AT&T. Verizon does not offer the iPhone 3GS.

The iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS beat out the $200 Samsung Infuse 4G, which was the third-best selling handset at AT&T. And at Verizon, the Samsung Charge 4G came in second, while the HTC Thunderbolt 4G was third.

"While Motorola Mobility and RIM enjoyed stronger sell-through trends in 2010, our (first half of calendar 2011) checks indicate a clear trend toward increasing share for Apple, HTC and Samsung," Walkley wrote.

In addition to strong sales of the iPhone 4, he also found that the 3G-capable iPad 2 is the top-selling tablet at both AT&T and Verizon, which are the only two carriers that offer the iPad in the U.S.

"Based on solid demand trends for iPhone/iPad, poor sell-through trends for competing tablet offerings, and the ramping iOS ecosystem driving longer-term replacement sales, we believe Apple will maintain dominant value share of both the tablet and smartphone markets to drive healthy long-term earnings growth," Walkley said.

Apple Hopes to Thwart Jailbreakers with iOS 5

When Apple releases iOS 5 later this fall, users who like to jailbreak their devices might find the process more complex than usual.

While perusing the code for iOS 5 beta 2, the members of the iPhone Dev Team discovered Apple is putting measures into place to make it more difficult for iOS 5 users to rollback to earlier versions of iOS.

It isn’t uncommon for more advanced users to want to try out the latest non-jailbroken software and then revert back to an earlier version so that they can take advantage of their jailbroken features. The current workaround is for users to backup their SHSH blobs before upgrading the software. This ensures that an older version of the OS and firmware can be restored at a later time.

With iOS 5, Apple is changing the way that the blobs are created. The blobs will be regenerated every time a device is rebooted, meaning that simply having an old version of the key around won’t allow users to install an older version of the software.

While this doesn’t prevent groups like the iPhone Dev Team from finding exploits and providing tools so that users can jailbreak their devices, it might make keeping a device in a jailbroken state more difficult.

With iOS 5, Apple will also be looking at doing over-the-air OS upgrades, meaning that the software can update itself without needing to connect with iTunes. In theory, this means that Apple could push out small updates to patch exploits, preventing a user who has agreed to install said update from jailbreaking their device.

On its blog, the Dev Team doesn’t sound overly concerned about what this means for jailbreaking in general but does note that Apple has “stepped up their game” when it comes to locking down the OS. We’re sure the cat-and-mouse game will continue.

Unlocked iPhones: Why Apple Won't Do It

For all those who believe Apple will unveil four unlocked iPhones to the U.S. market on Wednesday, I have news for you: Apple won't do it.

This news, touted by Boy Genius Report, is based on a so-called insider's Tweet. Chronic Wire wrote on Sunday:

"Unlocked iPhones headed to Apple Stores for Wednesday: MC603 (16GB, Black) MC604 (16GB, White) MC605 (32GB, Black) MC606 (32GB, White)"

134 characters was enough to send Apple fans—especially iPhone fans—into a tizzy. They are ready to buy. Too bad there won't be anything for them to buy, and here's why: Apple is not stupid. Apple knows the utter uselessness of this concept and the history of unlocked phones in the U.S. Yes, fanboys, early adopters, and geeks with time on their hands will snap them up. Even if the phones cost almost $600, they will buy. Why? Because they probably have jailbroken every iPhone since the product launched in 2007. They want Apple's lovely slab phone, but they want it their own way—even though toying around with the device to make it do things Apple doesn't want it to does not include getting it to run on another carrier.

The excitement around an unlocked iPhone would also make more sense if the radios inside the phones could be easily used on similar networks: they can't. As our mobile expert Sascha Segan explained to me, not every carrier uses the same frequency, even when they are using the same network technology. Segan also reminded me that an unlocked iPhone could run on AT&T's prepaid GoPhone plan and T-Mobile's 2G Edge offering. Plus there are, obviously, places where an unlocked iPhone could run outside the U.S. In China, the iPhone is considerably more expensive. I guess someone could buy a $600 unlocked iPhone here and sell it there for a hefty profit. Clearly Apple wouldn't want to enable that kind of transaction. Apple simply has nothing to gain from an unlocked U.S. iPhone. No matter how awesome it might sound, Apple won't do it. Why? As I said before, Apple isn't stupid.

Here's what Apple and its on-medical-leave CEO Steve Jobs know: In order to win in the consumer electronics space, you have to offer a cohesive environment that asks as little as possible of the consumer. Phones tied to particular cellular networks are easy. Activation can happen in the store, from your computer or over the phone. This strategy has allowed Apple to activate 175 million iPhones around the world and, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC), sell 14 million iPhones in the U.S. last year.

Consumers do not like the rigmarole of finding a carrier and working through what will likely be a more complicated activation process. Apple does not create niche products, devices that will sell to an excited few who can, perhaps, generate further interest in broader product offerings. Apple goes big or it goes home. Its products are designed for adoption by the largest set of consumers. Phone hackers and DIYers are not a part of this group. In fact, most iPhone jailbreakers know that hacked iPhones can turn into useless "bricks" when reconnected to iTunes for an update.

Google has sold unlocked phones. The Nexus One was unlocked. It helped launch Google's own online phone store. Now where is that today? Google's Samsung Nexus S is available on the T-Mobile network, but also unlocked for $529. They even let you unlock the regular Nexus S after 45 days so you can hook up with a different carrier (even a foreign one). Please, how many consumers in the U.S. are actually doing this?

How has Google become the number one mobile phone platform in the U.S.? (IDC puts it at 39% worldwide) It's done so by offering a steady stream of carrier-locked Android devices. Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and AT&T: They all have them. While rooting Android devices to access an Android OS build your carrier has yet to supply does happen, I haven't noticed Android consumers expressing much interest in unlocked Android devices.

Unlocked phones get a lot of media attention, but they just aren't that interesting to consumers. Ramon Llamas, IDC's Senior Research Analyst, Mobile Devices Technology and Trends, estimates that "less than 1% of all mobile phones were sold unlocked in the United States". Ooh, that sure does sound like a scintillating market for Apple.

And who is this Chronic Wire, anyway? He's a guy who's posted a grand total of 12 tweets since June 6 (of this year). He may be working the stock room at the local Best Buy (this is how Boy Genius Report gets most of its "scoops"—from well-placed blabbers at your garden-variety brick and mortar consumer electronic store). It is not clear to me if this is one of BGR's usual sources or simply someone who, judging by his tweets, has access to the iOS 5 developer build and is looking to build a bit of buzz for himself.

If Chronic Wire is right, he will have succeeded. He won't be, though. As I said before: Apple isn't stupid.

Will The Microsoft/Nokia Marriage Bear Fruit

For most people, it’s not a union made in Heaven. Perhaps more like a shotgun marriage where one has got into trouble and needs help from the other in hopes of delivering a hail Mary market blockbuster.

The worlds largest mobile phone maker is hooking up with the world’s largest software maker to produce a hopefully competitive smartphone for a exploding market now dominated by Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android based phones. This is a very unusual event being driven by fast paced technological advances and changing customer demand.

The mobile phone market once ruled completely by Nokia is now a whole new game where the smartphone is quickly pushing less techie low margin phones to the sidelines. Nokia still dominates the low end mobile phone market outside of North America but it is a shrinking market and Nokia’s new CEO Stephen Elop has stated the obvious in a blistering internal memo he wrote to Nokia staff.

The memo became public last Thursday and it is very interesting reading in that Nokia’s dirty linen gets scrubbed in public. The jist of it is that Apple and Google have come out of no where and are leaving Nokia far behind with their corporate panties down in the smartphone niche.

The Nokia software platform known as Symbian just can’t cut it against the other two emerging players and something has to be done about it quickly to put the brakes on Nokia’s slide down the techie slope to nowheresville.

Elop, a former Microsoft executive hired by Nokia only a few months ago as their CEO has decided that a Nokia built phone running on the Windows 7 mobile platform is the best short term solution available to stop the downward momentum.

Will it be good enough to work? Will it serve as a stop gap measure to try and buy Nokia a bit of time for Elop to turn the corporate culture around and get a cutting edge Nokia designed software/hardware smartphone package to market?

This is a fast paced market driven by technological change. Steve Jobs has used the iLine of Apple products to turn Apple in a few short years to perhaps one of the worlds largest corporations. He changed that corporate culture from a computer company making a mobile phone to a wireless smartphone company that also still makes computers.

Last week … rumors of Steve Job’s poor health caused a $10 billion sell off flash crash in Apple stock. This is a pretty fickle market where one faux pas can make and/or break your corporate sales momentum.

Blackberry maker RIM has been another company that has lost market share to Apple and Android. They have responded by buying up a software maker that has a good history of building robust operating systems and are adopting their future playbook devices and Blackberry phones to that technology. That’s their way of trying to cope with the smartphone market elephant and to try to stay in the race for lead dog.

In the ebb and flow of fast changing technology, the next new thing may change everything about a market. The smartphone concept was a game changer. How quickly competitors adapt to the new game will determine whether they remain competitive … or just quietly slip away into irrelevance.

In some markets, like Korea and Japan, mobiles are the preferred means of accessing information and buying things online (and even offline). Google and Apple are aware of this, and are likely looking into acquiring a mobile payments company.



BOKU, a San Francisco-based startup is reportedly in talks with both Apple and Google for a possible merger, acquisition or partnership
. Discussions are currently in early stages, but BOKU execs are said to be in high-level discussions with officials from both companies, which signals a possible bidding war between Apple and Google that might run into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The company is seen as an attractive target because of its partnerships with carriers in the US and around the world. BOKU claims a market of about 1.6 billion mobile users. BOKU recently partnered with AT&T for a system that lets users buy apps and media just by entering their mobile number instead of bank or PayPal details.

Both Apple and Google are in intense competition for dominance in the mobile market, with the iOS and Android, respectively. iOS has gained a sizable market share, but the newer Android is quickly catching up.

Apple, Google in secret talks with mobile payments startup BOKU

A new report claims both Apple and rival Google have been meeting with executives from BOKU, a leading mobile payments startup, to discuss a possible acquisition or wide-reaching partnership.

San Francisco-based startup BOKU aims to bring "bank-grade payments technology" to mobile platforms and create the standard for online payments using a mobile phone. Key partnerships with global carriers allow BOKU to claim it reaches 1.8 billion customers worldwide.

According to TechCrunch, BOKU President and CEO Mark Britto and co-founder Ron Hirson have met with Apple executives in charge of the iPhone several times over the past 3 weeks.

At the same time, BOKU has also allegedly participated in "high-level meetings" with Google Director of Engineering Michael Morrissey, who heads Google Mobile Services for Android, including the Android Market app store. BOKU has already partnered with Android developers to offer in-app purchases for Android apps.

Sources have yet to confirm whether Google is interested in an "outright acquisition " of the startup, but with both Apple and Google doing some "serious sniffing," the result could be a bidding war. The price tag on BOKU, which has brought in a number of "big-name investors," could reach 9-digits, reportedly costing Apple between $250-450 million, although TechCrunch was unable to fix an exact price at this stage in the negotiations.

With both companies looking for a mobile payments solution, negotiations with BOKU could reprise last year's race to acquire a mobile advertising agency. In late 2009, ad-seller AdMob attracted the attention of Google and Apple, with Google eventually acquiring the company for $750 million, just weeks after Apple reportedly approached the company.

According to The New York Times, Apple made a formal bid to acquire AdMob for $600 million. "While Apple conducted due diligence on the deal, AdMob agreed to a 45-day 'no shop' provision, a routine clause that prevented the start-up from offering itself for sale to others, according to three people briefed on the negotiations. But after Apple inexplicably let 45 days pass without consummating its offer, Google pounced," noted the Times report.

Just 3 days after AdMob's "no shop" provision with Apple expired, Google purchased AdMob. The search giant was willing to pay a large premium for AdMob simply to keep the company out of Apple’s arms, an executive familiar with Google’s acquisitions strategy told the Times.

After Apple failed to acquire AdMob, it turned to Quattro Wireless, paying $275 million to purchase the smaller mobile ad company. Quattro helped lay the groundwork for Apple's interactive iAd program.

"We don't know much about this advertising thing," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs when he announced iAd in April. "We tried to buy a company called AdMob, and Google came in and snatched them because they didn't want us to have them. We bought a smaller but still great company called Quattro."

With $51 billion in cash and reserves, Apple can afford to purchase BOKU, even in a bidding war. Last month, Jobs hinted that Apple could be looking into using its hefty war chest for more acquisitions.

"We strongly believe one or more strategic opportunities will come along we're in a unique position to take advantage of," Jobs said during the company's conference call for the fourth fiscal quarter of 2010. "We don't let the cash burn a hole in the pocket or make stupid acquisitions. We'd like to continue to keep our powder dry because we think there are one or more strategic opportunities in the future."

Apple Sues Motorola Over Multi-touch Phone Infringement

Apple has filed infringement suits against Motorola, saying that Multi-Touch smartphone uses Apple-owned intellectual property.

Patently Apple was the first to report that Apple two separate suits against Motorola that include six different patents. The suits mostly pertain to Motorola's next generation smartphones, specifically the Droid, Droid 2, Droid X, Cliq, Cliq XT, BakFlip Devour A555, Devour i1, and Charm.

We like competition as long as they don't rip off our IP," Tim Cook, chief operations officer for Apple said last year at a financial conference. "Obviously Apple thinks that Motorola has crossed that line."

What Apple is saying is that Motorola basically copied the iPhone. Court documents said Apple has a problem with "smartphones and associated software, including operating systems, user interfaces, and other application software designed for use on, and loaded onto such devices."

It's likely Motorola saw this countersuit coming. This isn't the first smartphone maker that Apple has sued. The company has taken similar action against HTC for its Android phones. Earlier this month, Motorola filed its own suit against Apple and NeXT in order to protect its product in suits that cover more than 18 different products,

Apple is seeking maximum damages including all royalties earned from the sale of the phone.

It's important that Apple safeguard its technology. iPhone sales comprise 39 percent of Apple's earnings, and the iPhone 4 was introduced to 17 more countries this year, which helped to expand Apple's revenue base.

When the iPhone 4 was launched in China, the device flew off the shelves, almost immediately. Due to problems with scalpers, the flagship store in Beijing was forced to shut down briefly.

Apple recently jumped into the list of top five, leapfrogging RIM for the number four position.

Microsoft has also sued Motorola, alleging patent infringement on its Android-based devices.
