Jailbreak hack enables Siri on iPhone 4, 4th-gen iPod touch

Hackers have succeeded in bringing a limited port of Apple's new Siri voice assistant feature onto "jailbroken" versions of the iPhone 4 and the fourth-generation iPod touch, though they have noted that the workaround is not ready for a public release.

Steve Troughton-Smith and Grant Paul  publicized the hack via Twitter late Saturday. The tweak requires that devices first undergo a jailbreak, the procedure for hacking an iPhone to run unauthorized code and applications.

The two hackers provided screenshots and a video (below) of their success, while reporting that the service was "literally just as fast" on the iPhone 4 as the iPhone 4S. According to Paul, UI on the iPod touch felt "slightly slower," though the actual Siri was "pretty much identical."

Troughton-Smith said that he had boiled the entire hack down to "one line of code" plus "a *ton* of filesystem changes." He also promised that all details of the workaround would be revealed once he confirmed "it works, doesn't break other things and is safe," probably after the release of an iPhone 4S jailbreak. When asked whether a release date had been set, he said no, adding that doing so would "anger the hive."

Apple unveiled Siri earlier in October, announcing the feature as an exclusive to the iPhone 4S. In April 2010, it was reported that the Cupertino, Calif., company had acquired the developer of the original Siri app, possibly for as much as $200 million.

Siri hack

Given that initial reviews of the iPhone 4S have pointed to Siri as a main draw and "standout feature" of the device, Apple could move quickly to block the workaround from hackers. This could potentially lead to a cat-and-mouse game similar to its continued efforts to prevent jailbreaking and unlocking.

best iPad Video Converter for Mac, wonderful entertainment for playing videos on iPad.

Apple's first television ad for the iPhone 4S focused exclusively on Siri serves as further evidence that the company plans to, at least at first, rely on the service to distinguish the device from its predecessor. Some have criticized Apple for taking 16 months to release an iPhone with nearly the same design as the fourth-generation iPhone.

Though Siri is currently only officially available on the iPhone 4S, a recent report from The New York Times suggested that Apple may center the interface of a rumored high-definition connected television set around the voice assistant feature.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacson during an interview that he had solved the problem of a simple and elegant interface for an Apple-developed HDTV.

"It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine," Jobs was quoted as saying. "I finally cracked it."

iPad 3 is Now Going Into Production

Rumors spread that the iPad 3 has begun its first production run on October 14. Apple has been in the news nonstop as of late with the death of their beloved icon Steve Jobs, the release of iOS 5 (despite its headaches at the moment), iCloud, and hotter sales of the iPhone 4S.

Many users are expecting some revolutionary new features in Apple iPad 3 including new A6 processor, "Retina Display" which would provide resolution upto an unbelievable 2048x1536, etc.

The much awaited Apple iPad3 tablet would arrive by this year end, a financial analyst - Chris Caso, has claimed quoting sources. According to him, the initial production would be in small numbers and is likely to be between 600,000 to one million. The iPad 2 and iPhone 4S are already being labeled as the hot ticket items on people’s wanted lists. Apple’s iPad 3 may be within those numbers, but it’s uncertain at what extent given the reality of fourth quarter sales.

Although a number of tablet makers are launching rival products, including Amazon with the Kindle Fire, Apple’s current closest competitor, Samsung, has been fighting against Apple in court to avoid injunctions on the sales of its devices. It currently faces bans on new tablet sales in only two markets, Germany and Australia, and yesterday had a bit of welcome news when a U.S. District Judge decided not to impose a ban on its new tablets in the U.S. for now.

Motorola Xoom Android 3.1 Tablet Review

The Apple iPad may still reign supreme in the world of consumer tablets, but the Android side of the equation is quickly picking up steam. While early Android tablets only ran on blown-up versions of the smartphone OS, Android 3.0 Honeycomb introduced a tablet-centric version of the platform with several tablet-centric optimizations. And the first to take advantage of these optimizations was the Motorola Xoom.

Now that it’s been officially updated to Android 3.1 (some have even gotten up to 3.2) and it’s competing against several other Honeycomb tablets, how does the Xoom stack up? Let’s have a look.

Key Features and Specifications

The version of the Motorola Xoom that I had to review as the Xoom MZ604. This comes with 32GB of internal storage capacity and Wi-Fi connectivity, but there is no 3G radio to be seen. The juice comes by way of an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor with a ULP GeForce GPU and 1GB of RAM.

As has become the norm for so many tablets in this range, the Motorola Xoom comes with a 10.1-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with an effective resolution of 800×1280 pixels. That works out to 149 ppi pixel density, which is a touch higher than the 132ppi that you find on the current iPad 2. Other key specs include the 730 grams of weight, stereo speakers, gyroscope, accelerometer, microSD expansion, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP support, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, mini-HDMI out, and microUSB port.

Overall Design and Usability

It won the award at CES 2011 and Motorola is quick to point that out on the packaging for the Xoom.

In terms of the device itself, you get a series of high quality plastics with a very smooth back. The screen is extremely glossy, so like so many other touchscreens, it gets riddled with greasy fingerprints very quickly. Since it is Honeycomb, most of what you’ll be doing is in landscape mode and everything has been laid out accordingly.

The (unlabeled) connection ports are on the bottom. Strangely, while there is a microUSB port, it cannot be used for charging; you have to use the provided wall charger to top up the internal battery. That takes away from a fair bit of versatility, especially when you’re on the road. The microSD card slot is on the top (which didn’t work until Android 3.1 update), as well as the 3.5mm headset jack. Volume buttons are along the left edge.

One thing that I didn’t like was the placement of the power button. It’s on the back of the Xoom, in the same part of the housing as the camera, flash, and one of the speakers. I suppose this makes for a more natural movement when holding the tablet, but I would have preferred they stuck to an edge like nearly everyone else.

General Performance and Battery Life

I can’t say that I was terribly displeased with the Xoom, but there really wasn’t much else going on that would make me choose the Xoom over the several other Honeycomb alternatives out there. It is on the heavier side of things at 730 grams, which is 50 grams more than the Asus Eee Pad Transformer (sans keyboard dock, of course) and nearly 200 grams more than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. That’s some serious extra heft.

The orientation sensor seemed to be a bit on the laggy side, as it could take some time before the screen would switch between landscape and portrait modes. Similarly, swiping between the different homescreens wasn’t quite as smooth as I had hoped. This seems to be a common concern with several Android tablets and it’s something that I hope is addressed in future updates; maybe it’s just a software/firmware thing.

As far as battery life is concerned, your mileage will certainly vary. Under moderate usage, I was able to get a little more than a day out of the Xoom. This is with Wi-Fi turned on and a couple of apps constantly running in the background. Lighter usage could see about three days.

Quadrant Benchmark Score

To test the performance of the Motorola Xoom, I ran the full benchmark on Quadrant Standard v1.1.7. This benchmark measures the performance of the CPU, memory, graphics, and other related areas. The overall score achieved by the Xoom on the first try was just 1593 (as pictured), but I ran the test again after rebooting the device and got a score of 1739.

Some people have argued that benchmarks for Android devices can be a little unreliable, but that’s what we have to go with. That range of scores puts the Xoom right in line with other Tegra2-powered Honeycomb tablets; I ran the benchmark on an LG Optimus Pad for comparison and got a score of 1700 even.

Conclusion

The Motorola Xoom is a solid product, but it is difficult to recommend it over similar Honeycomb tablets. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a lot lighter and the Eee Pad Transformer has that optional keyboard dock, for instance. I do like the slightly smaller footprint that the Xoom has (compared to the Eee Pad), but if you wanted smaller, you likely would be considering an 8.9 or even 7.0 inch tablet instead.

The placement of the power button will be hit and miss, depending on your preferences, but I really dislike the lack of support for USB charging. The speakers are reasonably loud, but because they are in the back, the directionality of the sound may not be ideal. I like Android tablets and I think they have a bright future, but the Xoom is very middle of the road for me right now… which is pretty much the story of most $399-$599 Honeycomb tablets these days.

Apple is missing out on a huge opportunity for their iPad

Apple has sold tens of millions of tablets and in doing such they’ve established a strong leading position in the tablet market. However even with their success Apple is still missing out on some opportunities for further growth, with the biggest one being the $250-$400 market for tablets. Apple has offers no brand new tablets for under $499 at this time.

The tablet is a foreign device for most at this time and it’s in the position that desktops or laptops were in when they first came out. People are intrigued by the new thing out but they’re also skeptical of the value of the new product. Apple is at a disadvantage when it comes to such buyers because of their price. Everyone I’ve talked to who has shown interest in the iPad has shunned it based on price, $499 is too high for what they perceive they’ll use one for.

I believe that Apple can and should be selling a tablet that’s at least $100 cheaper than the flagship iPad. Apple could go and create a budget iPad lite without cameras but I think they should have just kept the first generation iPad, the one that started the tablet craze, in-production when the new iPad 2 was launched.

I remember that on the eve of the iPad 2′s release Apple had dropped the price of the first iPad by $100 to clear remaining stock, they were sold out lightning fast after word spread around the web (Apple didn’t advertise the price cut on television or the web). –see a screenshot from that quick sale below, it’s all that’s left from the short event.

Apple should have continued selling brand new first generation iPads, but could they have done it? It’s well documented that the iPad 2 was facing serious production delays due to the Japan disaster of 2011, Apple only recently got caught-up with demand. However looking past the abnormal production situation of the iPad 2, could Apple have kept production of the first iPad going in 2011? I think the only problem they might have faced would be production costs.

However even with no production delays for the iPad 2 and production cost not being an issue, the reissuing of the first gen. iPad when the iPad 2 is available would go against what Apple normally does with new products. Apple discontinues products as the new version is launched. It’s unfortunate for buyers looking for an affordable iPad but that’s the reality of how Apple offers products. Hopefully they can change that for the tablet market. The first generation iPad is still a good tablet that people would happily buy, and the iPad 2 will still be desirable (after a price drop) when the iPad 3 comes out as well.

What to Expect with the iPad 3

While demos and free trials give us a taste of games and software prior to their release, mockups for the future iPad can now be found online. Everybody seems to know what’s in store for the new line of slates, even if Apple and Mr. Jobs keep silent about it. Rumors claim that the new slate might be introduced as the iPad 2 Plus or the iPad 2 HD. The major change, by the way, is a high resolution retina display. Fancy names, but these are thought to be enough to keep the eager wait for the iPad 3. Expected time of arrival for these pads is sometime between April and March of 2012, while other reports are saying as soon as November 2011!

Speaking of the mockups, a so-called prototype designed by Guilherme Schasiepen displays an even slimmer iPad than the current model. While the iPad 2 is 0.34 inches, the iPad 3 is expected to be at just a mere 0.29 inches! You can literally use the iPad 3 as a bookmark, though I doubt anyone would dare try it.

Also, the back of the slate would now be made up of glass instead of metal. But it may just well be glass-coated. The curved design is maintained, making sure that the feel of the iPad3 offers some feeling of familiarity to its loyal users. In other words, it looks and feels exactly the same.

A 5 mega-pixel camera on the back is a sweet treat. In front, there’s a Web cam that can be used with FaceTime. There are also new antennas for WiFi. As always, 3G/4G capabilities are supported, and can neatly be located near the speakers.

The future iPad 3′s resolution is expected to be 2 times bigger than the current 1024×768 display. The aspect ratio is maintained at 4:3, held back largely because of the look and layout of iOS. Of course, it would be stupid to assume that the future iPad would not have superior video capabilities. Everyone expects better resolution. There is no sense buying the same iPad with a different name.

Mockups are just mockups. Consumers expect Apple to come with a device that is slimmer and showcases improved hardware. Hopefully, Apple will break silence before the summer ends on an official iPad 3 release date.

iPad 3 Release Date Before Thanksgiving?

The iPad 3 may have a release date prior to US Thanksgiving

The China Times is claiming that Apple is set to release the iPad 3 by Thanksgiving. This of course could also be the release of the newly rumored iPad 2 HD or iPad 2 Plus. Rumors of a fall release date for the iPad 3 have been reported since the release of the iPad 2. The iPad 2 of course was released in March of this year, and was short of many expectations. China Times has released information that the supplies have been ordered for the first production run of both the iPhone 5 and the Apple iPad 3.

Rumors have the iPhone 5 being released in September and then the iPad 3 right around Thanksgiving. The day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday and the unofficial starting day of the holiday shopping season, is rumored to be a possible release date for the iPad 3. The iPhone 5 is rumored to have several major changes in the design. This of course is unconfirmed by Apple at this time. The iPad 3 is of course rumored to have a new high definition display, and possibly a Retina Display. Other improvements could include a faster processor and a much needed improved camera.

What about the iPad 2 HD?

The iPad 2 HD has also been rumored to be the next tablet from iPad, putting the iPad 3 on hold until 2012. At this point the China Times doesn’t reference which of the models are going to be released. If the iPad 2 HD is going to be the next release you can expect to see fewer improvements then with a release of an entirely new model. The iPad 2 HD, if real, is expected to be an upgrade to the display. However the rest of the design is to remain the same or very similar to the current iPad 2. This is similar to what Apple has done with phone releases in recent history.

The newest models could in fact be announced much sooner then this dates. If the release date for the iPad 3 is in fact Black Friday then the announcement could come much earlier. A possible roll out for the iPhone 5 and the iPad 3 could occur at the same time with the release of the iOS 5. This of course has been mentioned as a possibility it now seems like it may occur.

iPad competitors still can't match Apple's design efficiencies

As hardware makers struggle to compete with the iPad in terms of sales, they also can't match Apple's design efficiency, which helps to keep the iPad's costs down, one analysis has found.

IHS iSuppli this week revealed the results of its teardown analysis of eight different tablet models. They found that Apple's control of the iOS operating system allows it to reduce costs by limiting memory quantity and utilizing thinner batteries.

The iPad 2, for example, features just 512 megabytes of SDRAM, which is half the 1 gigabyte found in most competing tablets. That memory density reduction affords Apple a nearly $14 reduction in the build of materials for the iPad 2 compared to other tablets.

By controlling iOS, Apple can ensure that its proprietary mobile operating system features efficient memory usage, and allows the company to build a device with less RAM.

"Since Apple controls both the operating system and hardware design of the iPad, it is able to attain design efficiencies that other tablet manufacturers cannot," said Wayne Lam, senior analyst of competitive analysis at IHS. "These efficiencies become obvious in areas like the memory and the battery, where Apple maintains advantages in cost, space savings and performance compared with every competitor in the business."

Included in the comparison were three iPad models from Apple: both the first-generation Wi-Fi-only and 3G models, as well as the 3G-capable iPad 2. Also tested were the 7-inch-class Samsung Galaxy Tab and RIM BlackBerry PlayBook; while around the 10-inch screen size were the Motorola Xoom, Asus Eee Pad, and HP TouchPad.

Most tablets that compete with the iPad come from blueprints and reference designs outsourced to third parties. But Apple maintains tight control of the design of its devices, as well as components and contract manufacturers.

"Apple takes a vertically integrated approach to its products, from the operating system to the user interface, to the hardware design, down to the selection of individual parts used in the device," Lam said. "For example, Apple even uses its own applications processor design in both the iPad and iPad 2.

iSuppli

mo
"In contrast, Android tablet makers buy those capabilities from the likes of Nvidia, Texas Instruments and Qualcomm. This gives Apple greater control in multiple areas of product development."

The analysis noted that Apple has sent all of the trends in the tablet market, forcing manufacturers to gravitate toward the $500 "sweet spot" for pricing. And while early competitors embraced the 7-inch form factor, a decision which Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs derided, they have since moved toward the same size range as the 9.7-inch screen on the iPad.

Apple iPad: Five Things I Like Most About the iPad

In keeping with the precedent established in previous "30 Days With..." series, I devoted yesterday's post to detailing my complaints and criticisms. Today is dedicated to the counter point of view--a list of my favorite things about the iPad from my 30 Days With the iPad journey.

There were, of course, some bumps along the way, but there are also a few things that I truly appreciated about using the iPad instead of my notebook. Without further ado, here is my list of the five things I like most about the iPad:

1. Size. Size does matter. And when you're talking about lugging a device around all over town, the smaller the better...to a point. Carting a 15-inch notebook, or maybe one of those laptops with dual 17-inch displays, may provide more of a portable computing workhorse, but then we get into a semantic debate about defining "portable".

On the other end of the spectrum, you could argue that the iPhone (or an Android or Windows Phone 7 smartphone) are even more compact and portable, or make a case for smaller tablets like the7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab.

The iPad--especially the iPad 2--fits nicely in between those two extremes. It is big enough to make it practical, and small enough to make it portable. It has enough power and flexibility to do what you need it to in most cases, yet it is thin and light enough to be carried like a magazine. The same could be said of other similar tablets as well, like the Motorola Xoom, or the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

2. Stamina. It lasts, and lasts, and lasts. As if the size issue of the device itself isn't enough, working with a notebook on the go for more than a few hours involves carrying the power adapter and/or a backup battery as well. I can leave my home office with a fully-charged iPad 2, and use it freely for any purpose all day with virtually zero chance of running out of juice. It has the added benefit that if I did choose to carry the power adapter for insurance, the outlet plug and USB cable add little in the way of either size or weight.

3. AirPlay.AirPlay is simply awesome. For now, it is primarily an entertainment feature enabling me to stream audio and video content from the iPad to my TV or stereo. It works with some apps, and not with others.

4. App Store. You might recall that I have had some complaints about the Apple App Store. I'd like to see it cleaned up and better organized to make searching through 400,000 apps a little easier, and I wish the App Store would implement a test drive or return policy that would enable me to check out an app and scrap it if it doesn't meet my needs without getting charged for it.

5. Front Camera. The rear camera on the iPad 2 is essentially useless. If Apple doesn't plan to make significant jump in the quality and capabilities of that camera in the next iPad model, it should just eliminate it. The front-facing camera, on the other hand, is quite nice.

The ability to conduct FaceTime video calls, or participate in video conferencing sessions using Fuze Meeting, or WebEx make the iPad 2 much more valuable as a mobile productivity platform than its predecessor.

There is really a lot more that I like about the iPad. I was already an iPad fan and proponent before embarking on the 30 Days With the iPad series. However, just because I like the iPad in and of itself, or as a tablet, does not necessarily mean that I like the iPad as a PC replacement. I tried to keep this list of things I liked focused more or less on the ways I like the iPad 2 as a PC replacement.

Check back tomorrow for my summary and closing thoughts on how this experiment went, and the lesson I have learned along the way in the final 30 Days With the iPad post.

Samsung Sues Apple Over IPhone, IPad, IPod

Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s largest computer-memory chip maker, filed another lawsuit against Apple Inc. (AAPL), claiming the U.S. company infringed patents for technology used in its iPhone and iPad devices.

“Apple has copied many of Samsung’s innovations in its Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad products,” lawyers for the Suwon, South Korea-based company said in a lawsuit filed yesterday in federal court in Delaware.

Samsung also filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington on June 28 seeking to block imports of the devices containing the allegedly infringing technology.

The suit follows litigation in at least four countries as Samsung and Apple, the world’s largest technology company by market value, compete in the mobile-device market. In April, Cupertino, California-based Apple sued Samsung in federal court in Oakland, California, alleging the Korean company’s Galaxy phone and table computers “slavishly” copy the iPhone and iPad.

“They seem to have a lot to talk about,” Seo Won Seok, a Seoul-based analyst at NH Investment & Securities Co., said. “With these steps they are taking now, they seem to be trying to take a favorable position as part of the process to reach an agreement on cross-licensing in the end.”

Prior to the latest lawsuit, Samsung, which also supplies memory chips for Apple, had sued Apple in Seoul,Tokyo, San Francisco and Mannheim, Germany. Apple also has a case pending against Samsung in South Korea.

Trudy Muller, an Apple spokeswoman, didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment on the suit.

Samsung’s Delaware suit will be delayed if federal regulators agree to investigate the company’s complaints against Apple. The trade commission typically completes its reviews in 15 to 18 months.

Apple’s April 15 complaint claims Samsung is infringing seven patents related to the way Galaxy devices’ touch screens understand user gestures, including selecting, scrolling, pinching and zooming. Samsung is also copying three patents on the design, including the flat black face of the iPhone and iPad, according to Apple.

Apple also said on April 18 that Samsung “blatantly” copied its technologies and designs.

Samsung had asked a federal judge in the U.S. to order Apple to turn over samples of Apple’s forthcoming iPads and iPhones. It lost that bid on June 22.

A Review on The iPad 2

North Georgia Chief Information Officer Dr. Bryson Payne was among the lucky few to have received an iPad 2 early.

In an interview with The Saint he provided a review of the device. Some of the comments have been shortened for space considerations.

Q: What were your first impressions of the iPad 2?

A: I didn't think I would be as impressed as I am with the new iPad 2. With the addition of the cameras (front- and rear-facing), plus the increased speed, built-in screen-sharing and the ability to show your iPad's screen on a TV or projector) have won me over pretty quickly. The potential for innovation in both academic and administrative settings is astounding.

Q: Is it really that much better than a first-generation iPad?

A: The front-facing camera really takes the new iPad 2 to a new level. The first time I saw a screen shot of the Cisco WebEx video conferencing app on the iPad 2 I thought it was as close to a "killer app" as I'd ever seen. You can conference with up to 25 people and you can share files and documents... As I saw it, I thought meetings at North Georgia would never be the same.

Q: You mentioned the Cisco WebEx app - what are your other favorite apps on the iPad 2?

A: I love the Citrix Reciever. This Citrix app allows you to access a virtual Windows desktop from your iPad, and it's surprisingly usable. You can edit documents, print, save files, and more right on a virtual desktop. I like the features in iBooks, the Kindle app, USA Today and other news apps for keeping well-read and up-to-date. . . The one app I'm waiting for is a great notes app. There's still no outstanding iPad 2 stylus-type note-taking app. I still carry paper and pens alongside my iPad 2 to jot down quick notes, and that just feels wrong.

Q: Apple has to be holding something back for the iPad 3 - what features are missing, or is there anything that could be better?

A: I have only three complaints about the iPad 2, and none of them are deal-breakers for me. If future iPad versions allow you to set up everything on the device itself without an old-fashioned desktop or laptop in the way, it could truly stand apart as a replacement for those devices.

Second, the speaker is located on the lower back of the iPad 2. You have to cup your hand somewhat awkwardly around the back when listening to video or audio to get the full volume.

Third, while the new magnetic cover definitely has a cool factor, it doesn't feel as sturdy as the "old" iPad case for standing the iPad up on its own, and you have to be careful not to pick the iPad up by the magnetic cover.

Q: Is there anything else you'd like to share about this innovative device?

A: I think it's going to be a great launching pad for innovation in the classroom and on the administrative side of the university alike. It's certainly got the right tools for collaboration, and I can't wait to see how North Georgia takes advantage of technologies like the iPad 2 over the coming year.

What to Expect From Apple’s iPad 2.0 Event

Apple has been unusually indiscreet about what it plans to unveil this week: the next iPad.

In invitations e-mailed to press last week, Apple attached an image of a calendar page peeled back to reveal the corner of an iPad. We get the picture.

But what about the next iPad, and what else can we realistically expect from the March 2 event? Here’s a quick rundown of what Apple is likely to introduce Wednesday.

iPad 2
The iPad 2 is probably going to be a modest upgrade from the current tablet. Credible reports suggest that major changes include a faster processor, more RAM, a front-facing camera for video chat, and a thinner and lighter overall design.

There’s been a bit of debate surrounding the iPad 2’s display. Some have bet on the iPad 2 gaining a high-resolution display that Apple could call the “retina” display, similar to the iPhone 4’s screen.

However, well-sourced Apple blogger John Gruber insists the next iPad will have the same resolution as the current one, or 1,024×768 pixels. A super high-res display would probably be cost-prohibitive today, Gruber argues, due not only to the cost of the display, but also because of the amount of RAM required for such high-res graphics.

That’s a reasonable analysis, because it’s probably a high priority for Apple to retain the iPad’s $500 starting price, which competitors are failing to match. A higher-res display would more realistically come in a later-generation iPad when costs for both screen technology and memory come down.

Like the current iPad, we can expect the iPad 2 to be bundled with 3G options for both Verizon and AT&T subscribers. We don’t expect a 4G iPad until the faster 4G networks are more ubiquitous.

iOS 4.3
The latest version of iOS for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch has been in beta for a few months, and Apple on Wednesday will likely announce an official release date for the upgrade.

New features seen so far in iOS 4.3 include improvements to interface elements, wireless hotspot support for AT&T iPhones and new multitouch gestures for controlling the iPad.

The new multitouch gestures for iPad are by far the most interesting new feature, but Apple has already told developers that it was only providing gestures as a preview to collect feedback on how they should work; the feature will not go live in iOS 4.3.

App Demos
Every iOS hardware event has been packed with app and game demos to show off new hardware and software features, so expect lots of these on Wednesday.

MobileMe Reboots?
There continues to be speculation about Apple rebooting its paid MobileMe service to have more seamless online integration. The Wall Street Journal suggests the service this year will become a free “locker” for photos, music and videos to reduce the need for devices to carry a lot of memory. Furthering this speculation, MacRumors points out that Apple has discontinued sales of MobileMe both online and in retail stores.

However, we have doubts a new MobileMe will go live Wednesday, as Apple said in a recent investor meeting that its new data center for managing cloud services will not be open until spring to support MobileMe and iTunes.

iPad makes a splash with businesses-iPad 2 is coming

The iPad tablet computer has been tested or deployed at 80% of Fortune 100 companies, according to Apple. And now the company is boosting its sales support for businesses to address that growing demand, Bloomberg News reported last week.

For years, Internet technology professionals have pushed "for a way to buy Macintoshes and iPhones directly from Apple," says Forrester Research analyst Ted Schadler. "Now with IT support for iPads, they are putting even more pressure on Apple to sell to and support companies—and not just consumers."

Industry tracker iSuppli predicts Apple will ship 43.7 million iPads this year and 63.3 million in 2012, up from an estimated 14 million in 2010. While it is too early to tell how many buyers will be corporate, the explosive growth comes as Apple is expected to announce an updated iPad on Wednesday in San Francisco.

Corporate giants thus far have leaned toward putting iPads into their workforce as sales tools.

• Medical-device maker Medtronic put more than 5,000 iPads in the hands of sales reps. The day iPads first came out, Medtronic snapped up 10, loaded them with product information, and put them into a booth for a cardiologist conference, stealing all the buzz that day. "We quickly realized the business value of enabling the sales force," says Medtronic CIO Mike Hedges.

•Mercedes-Benz put 400 iPads into dealerships keep transactions on showroom floors, near the vehicles.

Dealers can check credit on the iPads or find additional information about the vehicles. It's a powerful tool to make the conversation more concrete, says John Ferry, media relations manager for Mercedes-Benz Financial Services.

Yet corporate adoption can only move as fast as IT department will allow. IT groups are forced to define new policies for what kinds of data can and can't be accessed on the devices, among other issues, before bringing them on company networks.

"We see a lot of executives that want the convenience and accessibility of that device. One of the inhibitors is the issues of how do you secure that device," says Gary Steele, CEO of security company ProofPoint.

That hasn't stopped SAP. The business analytics software maker has picked up 3,500 iPads. "It's great to see that Apple is now embracing the enterprise marketplace," says CIO Oliver Bussmann.

Apple's lead in both the consumer and corporate markets faces an army of rival tablet contenders only just getting started. Motorola's new Xoom, based on Google's Honeycomb version of Android, is the most closely watched among analysts. Nearly a decade ago, some large companies adopted Microsoft's Windows Tablet PC for specialized purposes. It failed to spark widespread interest. "The only tablet provider out there right now is Apple," says DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim.

Shipments of all tablets, including iPads, are expected to reach 55.7 million worldwide in 2011 and more than triple by 2014 to 172.4 million, according to industry watcher DisplaySearch
