Apple's iPad Disruptive Product of the Year 2010

I'll avoid the dicey proposition of naming what I think is the best product of the year. But I can say with certainty that Apple's iPad was the most disruptive.

Beyond the iPad's well-chronicled popularity, impressive shipment numbers, and reported theft of Netbook market share, the disruption for me was very personal: it played havoc with my own computing habits and with people around me who bought the iPad.

As I've written before, initially, I could do little more than paw at the screen in a vain effort to figure out how I was actually going to use the device. But that changed fairly quickly. Within a few weeks, I found myself taking it everywhere (I have the 3G version) and using it instead of my laptop at airports, on planes, and in the car. Not to mention using it at home when relaxing on the sofa.

So, here's why it's disruptive: I always thought that my MacBook Air was the ultimate portable computer and I would never need anything else. Wrong. It turns out that a laptop--because of its relative weight and keyboard-centric clamshell design--is not always the ultimate machine when traveling or when there is a need to some quick home computing. The iPad showed me that there is a better form factor and interface (touch) for a surprising number of tasks.

And that seemingly trivial feature known as instant-on (and almost-instant 3G connections) combined with its 1.5-pound weight makes all the difference in the world.
In short, when I go from using my laptop most of the time to only about half of the time, that's disruptive. Moreover, I think, it's safe to say that I'm not alone.

Finally, I'm anticipating the next iPad (thinner, lighter, dual-core processor?) like I would previously anticipate a new laptop. And can't wait to see what first-tier companies like Motorola and RIM have to offer.

Google brings check-ins to Google Latitude on iPhone, 30 languages to Places

Unsurprisingly, El Goog gifted the Android versions of Latitude and Places with these updates a few weeks back, but now the iOS loyalists are being brought into a similar circle. The search giant has just added check-ins to the iOS version of Google Latitude, with any iDevice using iOS 4 or higher being deemed compatible. In related news, the Applefied build of Google Places is now available in 30 languages, and there's an added 'Saved Places' feature for keeping tabs on your favorite spots. You can check your phone for updates, or if you haven't dug in yet, have a poke around in the App Store.

I think Apple would welcome Google Navigation, but I think Google Navigation is the one app that Google doesn't want it's biggest competition to have, as it legitimately could be a reason for someone to buy an Android over the iPhone. An app like Places or Latitude isn't going to have that same effect.

What to Expect From Apple’s iPad 2.0 Event

Apple has been unusually indiscreet about what it plans to unveil this week: the next iPad.

In invitations e-mailed to press last week, Apple attached an image of a calendar page peeled back to reveal the corner of an iPad. We get the picture.

But what about the next iPad, and what else can we realistically expect from the March 2 event? Here’s a quick rundown of what Apple is likely to introduce Wednesday.

iPad 2
The iPad 2 is probably going to be a modest upgrade from the current tablet. Credible reports suggest that major changes include a faster processor, more RAM, a front-facing camera for video chat, and a thinner and lighter overall design.

There’s been a bit of debate surrounding the iPad 2’s display. Some have bet on the iPad 2 gaining a high-resolution display that Apple could call the “retina” display, similar to the iPhone 4’s screen.

However, well-sourced Apple blogger John Gruber insists the next iPad will have the same resolution as the current one, or 1,024×768 pixels. A super high-res display would probably be cost-prohibitive today, Gruber argues, due not only to the cost of the display, but also because of the amount of RAM required for such high-res graphics.

That’s a reasonable analysis, because it’s probably a high priority for Apple to retain the iPad’s $500 starting price, which competitors are failing to match. A higher-res display would more realistically come in a later-generation iPad when costs for both screen technology and memory come down.

Like the current iPad, we can expect the iPad 2 to be bundled with 3G options for both Verizon and AT&T subscribers. We don’t expect a 4G iPad until the faster 4G networks are more ubiquitous.

iOS 4.3
The latest version of iOS for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch has been in beta for a few months, and Apple on Wednesday will likely announce an official release date for the upgrade.

New features seen so far in iOS 4.3 include improvements to interface elements, wireless hotspot support for AT&T iPhones and new multitouch gestures for controlling the iPad.

The new multitouch gestures for iPad are by far the most interesting new feature, but Apple has already told developers that it was only providing gestures as a preview to collect feedback on how they should work; the feature will not go live in iOS 4.3.

App Demos
Every iOS hardware event has been packed with app and game demos to show off new hardware and software features, so expect lots of these on Wednesday.

MobileMe Reboots?
There continues to be speculation about Apple rebooting its paid MobileMe service to have more seamless online integration. The Wall Street Journal suggests the service this year will become a free “locker” for photos, music and videos to reduce the need for devices to carry a lot of memory. Furthering this speculation, MacRumors points out that Apple has discontinued sales of MobileMe both online and in retail stores.

However, we have doubts a new MobileMe will go live Wednesday, as Apple said in a recent investor meeting that its new data center for managing cloud services will not be open until spring to support MobileMe and iTunes.

You Learn More From Movies Than Newspapers

Charles Ferguson’s Inside Job indicted five administrations’ worth of politicians, bureaucrats, economists and business executives in its dissection of decisions that led to the creation of the current financial abyss. It did so in a way that was as easy to understand as it was non-partisan. It was only one of a handful of documentaries that endeavored to explain how the U.S. – the so-called “greatest country in the history of the world” – gets stuck to tar babies, from which it can’t shake itself loose. Ferguson’s previous doc, No End in Sight, had described how America bungled its promise to bring freedom to Iraq, by ignoring the necessity for a post-victory strategy. Filmed in a remote corner of Afghanistan, Restrepo reminded us of both the heroism and dedication of American soldiers and the futility of keeping them in harm’s way.

By exposing the poisoning of citizens living near drilling sites, Gasland very much resembled a sequel to Erin Brockovich. Exit Through the Gift Shop” asked viewers to decide for themselves the difference between art and vandalism, reality and fantasy. By putting an entertainment icon under a microscope, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work once again asked, “What price fame?” Babies chronicled the first year of life for children in four disparate locations around the globe. The Lottery took us to a publicly funded charter school where enrollment – and a child’s future – is determined by the luck of the draw. Chris Rock’s Good Hair explained why it’s never a good idea to mess with a black woman’s hair.

It’s the rare documentary that makes more than a million dollars at the box office. Rarer still is the doc that finds distribution outside the festival circuit. It’s on DVD that the films find the most convenient audience, as well as a place to add deleted interviews and background information. Also coming to video in the next few weeks are such high-profile films as Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, The Tillman Story and Waiting for Superman.

Most high brow: “Destricted”
Made in: Great Britain, 2006

The lowdown: “Destricted” is a collection in which international artists like Larry Clark and Richard Prince direct short films displaying their views of contemporary sexuality. The coup de grace goes to Marina Abramovic for her “Balkan Erotic Epic,” which illustrates sexual folkways of Eastern Europe.

Topless babuskas, naked men fondling a hillside … makes you want to book a ticket to Serbia before the closing credits.
